Description
Antarctic research station. Engineer working on the receiving antenna of the Advanced Ionospheric Sounder (AIS) at the Halley research station, Antarctica, with the Piggott building in the background. This device provides data on activity in the ionosphere - part of the upper atmosphere. AIS was operated first at Halley IV in 1982 and is said to be the tallest man-made structure in the Antarctic, with twin masts of almost 50 metres, from which its transmitter is hung.
