Description
Nostradamus transhorizion skywave radar. An engineer watches a radar echo produced by Nostradamus on a computer, with the antenna of the radar in the background. Unlike conventional radar, whose range is limited by the Earth's curvature, Nostradamus can see up to 2000 kilometres past the horizon. It does this by bouncing high frequency waves off the ionosphere, 80 kilometres above the Earth's surface. There are over 300 antenna on this site, with all the transmission and reception electronics sheltered below ground. Nostradamus was designed and developed by ONERA, the French aerospace research agency.
