Description
Radio signals and the ionosphere. Illustration showing how radio signals can be transmitted over long distances. Short wave radio signal propagation can be limited by obstacles and the curvature of the Earth. The ionosphere is a region of the upper atmosphere where there are large concentrations of free ions and electrons. This region reflects medium and short wave radio signals, bouncing them back towards the Earth and enabling these radio communications to be heard over vast distances.
